The Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) implements clean air solutions that protect the quality of life for the citizens of Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County through community partnerships along with programs and services such as  public education, air monitoring, planning, and permitting and enforcement. Public Education

AQMD educates the general public about causes of air pollution and everyday solutions that can be carried out by individual citizens. Public Information and Community Outreach services are implemented by using all forms of media and educational avenues.

Air Monitoring

AQMD monitors and assures the scientific accuracy of the ambient air quality data collected at each of our monitoring sites located within Washoe County for the determination of compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Planning

AQMD is required is required by federal law and state statute to develop and maintain an air pollution control program in order to bring areas not attaining the NAAQS into attainment and maintain good air quality throughout the District while providing quality information to ensure sound air quality regulatory decision-making.

Permitting and Enforcement

AQMD enforces the Washoe District Board of Health Regulations Governing Air Quality Management rules and regulations for stationary sources for the protection and education of public health and the environment. In coordination with the Air Pollution Control Hearing Board (APCHB), AQMD is required by federal law to permit and inspect stationary sources of air pollution for compliance with both the federal requirements and local air quality regulations.

The Health District is located in the Washoe County complex at the corner of 9th Street and Wells Avenue.  The Air Quality Management Division is on the first floor of Building B.

Governing Boards

District Board of Health (DBOH)
The DBOH, through Northern Nevada Public Health, has jurisdiction over all public health matters in the Health District.
Air Pollution Control Hearing Board (APCHB)
The APCHB is a fair and unbiased panel that hears appeals to air quality violations when a negotiated resolution cannot be achieved. The APCHB meets the first Tuesday of every month (as needed).
